HISTORY OF SPENFORD HOUSE

The History Of Spenford House 1640

Edward Spencer Dickin was born on 18 Sep 1872, the son of Captain Thomas Acherley Massy Dickin. He was a second-lieutenant in the Queen's Bays on 7 Dec 1895, lieutenant on 10 Mar 1897, and captain on 30 Dec 1899. He married Norah Grace Eden Stopford, daughter of Lt.-Col. Horace Robert Stopford and Marguerite Louisa Greathed MacDowell, on 18 July 1911. They had a daughter, Evelyn Nancy Stopford Dickin who died in 1998. They later lived at Loppington House, Loppington, Shropshire. He reached the rank of Major in the service of the 2nd Dragoon Guards. He died on 28 October 1960.The photo shows him wearing the mess kit of the Queen's Bays. He died 28th Oct 1960. His Wife Norah Grace Eden (Stopford) Dickin was the mother of Lady Evelyn Nancy Stopford Macpherson-Grant.

1901 census has Richard Diggory living here (as a farmer) with his wife & 4 children. Obviously a tenant farmer as he is classed a a worker (an not an employer or own account (meaning self employed)).Spenford House. The earliest traced records name this as Rose Villa. Later as “The Laundry” as when the Dickin Coachman Ernest Kitley and his wife Ada lived there, she used to do Loppington House’s washing.
It was later re-named Spenford House. Family tradition related by Margaret Norah suggests that this was a combination of Spen from Spencer and ford from Stopford. Alternatively this may have its origins in Spenford Bridge over the nearby river Roden and Spenford Meadow both of which names can be traced back to 18th century.
Margaret Norah died on 12 October 1983 and her Obituary was published in The Times. Her ashes were buried on 17 December in Loppington churchyard.
Her husband died on 21 March 1984 and his ashes were buried with Margaret’s on 5 November of that year.
Sidney Edward had been born on 8 January 1901, one of the 8 children of John and Anna Maria, a farmer at The Cleve, Harwell, Wantage, Berks.
In September 1939 he was a newly married arable famer living at Hillside, Reading Road, Henley. His first wife, Dorothy Kathleen nee Mason died on 19 July 1950.
Children from his first marriage have not been traced.

Loppington Hall

Interestingly, Loppington Hall was put up for sale "sold to best bidder' in 1776 which included a selection of land and numerous properties. The newspaper article states that it was the estate of the late Rev. Doctor Legh. Sounds really lovely with 156 acres - shame it was 246 years ago!
